Bring your own carrier

Updated October 1, 2026

Bring your own carrier (BYOC) connects your carrier account to Drop Cowboy®. Your calls, voicemails and texts then go out through it, and your numbers come from it. Your phone lines, campaigns and dialer work the same way after you connect.

Connect your carrier

Use this to link your carrier account and add its numbers to your phone lines.

  1. Open Connect your carrier in the left menu. The page is titled Carrier Hub.
  2. Pick your carrier. For Twilio, click Connect Twilio. For others, use Quick Start with Supported Carriers, or click Add Carrier in the Carriers list. For a carrier not listed, pick Custom Carrier.
  3. In Ready to use your own carrier?, click Yes, connect my carrier. If your phone lines already have Drop Cowboy numbers, they will need new numbers from your carrier.
  4. Under API Credentials, copy in the values from your carrier's dashboard:
Carrier What to enter
Twilio Account SID, Auth Token
Telnyx API Key
SignalWire Space URL, Project ID, API Token
Commio Account ID, Account Token, Username, Password
Bandwidth Account ID, Username, Password, Site ID, Application ID
Flowroute Access Key, Secret Key
Plivo Auth ID, Auth Token
Vonage API Key, API Secret
Sinch Project ID, Key ID, Key Secret
Custom Carrier Carrier Name, SIP Host, SIP Port, Username, Password
  1. Click Save Credentials. The carrier shows Connected in the Carriers list.
  2. With more than one carrier, open the one most sends should use and click Set Default. It shows DEFAULT.
  3. On Twilio, click Sync from Twilio under Texting registration (A2P 10DLC) to bring in your existing texting registration.

Then add your carrier's numbers in Send from your carrier's numbers.

If it doesn't work:

  • The carrier shows Not Connected. The credentials didn't match. Copy them again from your carrier's dashboard, then click Update Credentials.
  • "Dedicated IP Required." Some carriers, like Commio, need a dedicated IP. Click Add Dedicated IP, pick a size with Select, then click Review & Pay. The carrier connects once the IP is ready.
  • You want to stop using the carrier. Open it and click Disconnect, then Yes, Disconnect.

If you don't see Connect your carrier, ask your account owner for access.

Sign your calls with STIR/SHAKEN

If your carrier gave you a STIR/SHAKEN certificate, you can sign calls with it.

  1. In Carrier Hub, under Account, click STIR/SHAKEN.
  2. Click Upload Certificate. Fill in Certificate Name and add your Private Key (.pem) and Public Cert (.pem).
  3. Click Review certificate, then Apply to all trunks. The status shows Applied.

To stop, click Stop signing.

Send from your carrier's numbers

Use this to put your carrier's numbers on phone lines, so every send can use them.

  1. Open Connect your carrier in the left menu and click your carrier.
  2. Under Next: add your phone numbers, click Set Up Phone Line & Add Numbers. On the Numbers tab, you can also pick Add numbers to an existing phone line, then Open Phone Line Setup.
  3. On the line's Numbers tab, click Add Phone Number, then Sync from Carrier.
  4. Click Load Carrier Numbers. Tick the numbers you want, or tick Import all numbers on account.
  5. Click the sync button, like Sync All Numbers. The numbers join the phone line.
  6. To get more numbers, click Buy a New Number and search as usual. They come from your carrier.

Sends use the phone line you pick, or your team's default line. See Choose the caller ID people see.

As a BYOC team, you can also show a custom caller ID by passing caller_id on a send through the API. Use only numbers you have the right to call from. See Integrations, API keys and webhooks and the developer docs. Always identify your business location truthfully when asked by recipients.

To text from these numbers, the line needs a registered texting campaign. See Send texts from a phone line.

If it doesn't work:

  • Sync from Carrier isn't offered. Your carrier isn't connected yet. Finish Connect your carrier first.
  • Load Carrier Numbers finds nothing. Your carrier account has no numbers, or they're on another sub-account. Add numbers in your carrier's dashboard, then click Load Carrier Numbers again.
  • A campaign fails with No Caller ID. No phone line was picked and the team has no default. Pick a phone line on the campaign, or set a default line.
